The 1 in – 1 out method: the simple rule that transforms your wardrobe

A gentle and effective habit to avoid accumulation and keep only the essentials… with style.

When a client places her first order with Mëya, she discovers my favorite rule: the 1 in – 1 out method. Every time a new item comes in, another one goes out. Simple to say… and incredibly effective when applied consistently.

Why this method changes everything

It prevents your wardrobe from overflowing, encourages you to choose intentionally, and clarifies your style. In short: fewer clothes, more style.

Close-up materials: beige knit, chocolate suede and white cotton, Mocha Mood capsule palette.
Capsule palette: materials and colors that combine easily.

How to choose which item should go?

The real question isn't just what to buy, but what to let go of. Here are 5 concrete methods, to apply on a case-by-case basis.

1 The Time Rule

If you haven't worn an item in 12 months (excluding formal wear), it's a sign: it's no longer part of your life.

2 The Outfits Rule

Ask yourself: "Can I create at least 3 outfits with this item and what I already own?" If the answer is no, thank it… and free up space.

3 The Duplicate Rule

Two almost identical pairs of jeans? Three white shirts? Keep the most flattering/most worn, and let the others go.

4 The Comfort Rule

Items that pinch, slip, scratch, or make you doubt have no place in a wardrobe that breathes.

5 The “Just in Case” Rule

If you're keeping an item "just in case," ask yourself when that "case" last actually happened. Most often, the answer is enough.

Hanger tips: reverse the direction to spot what you don't wear.
Quick tip: reverse the hangers to easily spot what you don't wear.

Integrating the method into daily life

  • Before buying: already think about the item that will leave.
  • When tidying up: immediately place the chosen item in a "donate / resell / recycle" bag.
  • Every month: do a 10-minute mini-audit to stay on track.
Box ready for donation: neatly folded clothes, 'donation' label.
Donate, resell or recycle: give your items a second life.
Flatlay capsule: camel pants, white shirt, beige knit, gold accessories.
Mëya Capsule: fewer well-chosen pieces = more possibilities.
